C-SPAN Makes a visit to
Fort Worth and TCU
C-SPAN is currently on the road with its “2018 C-SPAN
Cities Tour,” to provide their national audience with a look
inside the unique history and literary life of selected cities
through their Book TV (C-SPAN2) American History TV
(C-SPAN3) programming and also o conduct community and
educational outreach in each city.
On their Cities Tour, C-SPAN producers made a stop in
Fort Worth. Working with the Charter cable local affiliate,
C-SPAN visited literary and historic sites where local
historians, authors and civic leaders were interviewed. One of
their stops was at TCU and the TCU Library. Two segments
were produced in our Special Collections Department – the
Jim Wright Collection for American History TV and the
Grace Halsell, “In Their Shoes” Exhibit for Book TV. The
history segments aired on American History TV (AHTV) on Mary Saffell works with C-SPAN Producers
C-SPAN3 and the literary events/non-fiction author segments aired on Book TV on

Jim Wright Special Collections Jim Wright represented Texas’ 12th District for
thirty-four years, rising to the Speakership in 1987 and eventually resigning because
of an ethics investigation. Mary Saffell, senior archivist at TCU’s Special Collections,
shared items in his collection that provide insight into his relationship with his home
district and his colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives.

“In Their Shoes” Exhibit Special Collections Senior Archivist Mary Saffell
shared items that tell the story of journalist and author Grace Halsell. Halsell is
known for her in-depth research for her most famous work, Soul Sister, in which
she changed the color of her skin to experience life as a black woman in the 1960s.
