If We Build It, They Will Come
Some of the new furniture has power outlets – a hot
commodity for students.
“Electronic devices play a major role in the study process.
Students must be able to plug in their laptop, or it becomes
a problem,” Koelker said. “This furniture is a smart option.
Furniture that doesn’t have outlets have a power outlet
nearby so students can plug in their devices.”
This study area also contains several large (8 top and 6
top) and small tables (4 top) for group study opportunities.
Additionally, SGA purchased four sit-stand tables, which
allows the student to position the workstation at a level
convenient for sitting or standing.

welcome and inspired in their hand-picked study spaces. To
increase the services provided, the library recently added
new furniture to the west-side, resulting in a new look and
a new popular study destination for undergraduate students.
Social spaces are today’s new workspaces. Working alone
or together, students seek a lively place with energy and
vibe. The Mary Couts Burnett Library has created an
inviting space with the right furniture to support individual
and collaborative studying. Students now can study in
fabric-covered carrels with desks, curved lounge seating,
comfy chairs with ottomans, and armless chairs. They can
also study at tables and even use one of the new standing
tables.
Group Study
“The goal was to create a refreshing and inviting space
where students would enjoy spending their time,” said Dr.
June Koelker, dean of the library. “Whether it be private
study or collaborative teamwork, students should be able
to find an appropriate space with various types of furniture
and configurations.”
Each piece serves a purpose. The Brody Chairs are self-
contained work spaces ergonomically designed for focused
task work by individuals. The use of the Brody Chairs
helps the Library meet the demand for additional quiet
study space, supportive seating and additional power
supplies.
The Lagunitas also create an ideal space for individual
studying. The comprehensive seating offers multi-modal
support and varying degrees of privacy through high
panels. The unique articulating back cushion allows for
toggling between lean forward and lean back postures. Brody Chair
