Eighth Annual Banned Book
Jacket Design Competition
Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2019) brings
together the entire literary community - librarians,
booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers and readers of
all types – in shared support of the freedom to seek and to
express ideas, even those some may consider unorthodox or
unpopular.
Since 2011, Graphic Design Instructor Jan Ballard has
coordinated a Banned Books Jacket Design Competition
in collaboration with the TCU Library. In its eighth year,
Graphic Design students submitted projects that were
judged by library staff.
The winners of the book cover design are:
1st Place – Hannah Wilson, Native Son by Richard Wright
2nd Place – Rae McCollum, Deliverance by James Dickey
3rd Place – Cassie Schmidt, The Magnificent Ambersons
by Booth Tarkington
Who Wrote the TCU Alma Mater
TCU’s Alma Mater Song lyrics were written circa 1927 by
Glenn Canfield (Class of 1928).
On October 17, 2019, Special Collections had a surprise
visit from Dan Shepherd, producer for CNN Worldwide,
and grandson of Glenn Canfield, the man who wrote the
TCU Alma Mater song.
Shepherd enjoyed a tour of campus and a tour of Special
Collections with library specialist Allison Kirchner where
he was taken back in time with the history of the writing of
the university’s alma mater.
In the 1927-1928 school year, TCU hosted a contest to
select an alma mater hymn for the school. Senior Glenn
Canfield submitted a song and won. His song can still be
heard across campus today – from convocation to athletic
events to commencement.
