Page 3 - 2019 Fall Newsletter
P. 3
We’re nearing the end of fall
semester. As the weeks come
closer to exam time, the intensity of
student academic endeavors rises!
I ask library staff to remember
when we were 18 and facing our
first college-level exams (for some
of us that’s been a while ago....!).
Sometimes students skip meals,
drink too much caffeine and cut
back on sleep. These behaviors
aren’t directly related to the library, but we do see thousands
of students who are stressed out around this time each year. I
believe being in the library provides a comfort level for them.
The library is open 24 hours, Sunday through Friday nights
all semester, though the number of students who stay through
the night increases as the semester goes along, peaking during
exam week. This year exam week is December 16 - 20. If you
are reading Windows during this week, you have a good idea
of what is going on in the library!
I want to mention two highlights from this semester. Every
three years the Friends of the TCU Library support the
TCU Texas Book Award, and this year we were honored to
recognize the scholarship of Dr. Monica Martinez (faculty at
Brown University) for her book: The Injustice Never Leaves
You published by Harvard University Press. Many TCU
students attended the award reception. Another highlight this
fall was the completion of an architectural feasibility study to
renovate the interior of the west side of the library. For those
of you who have seen the 2015 renovation, you know the east
side of the library is beautiful along with the elegant new west
entrance facing University Dr. However, the interior of the
building, particularly the 1950s wing, is in need of renovation.
Now with the architectural study, we can systematically
accomplish small projects to achieve the larger goal.
I hope you have a Merry Christmas, that you find time to read
a good book and that you visit us sometime in the New Year!
