Provost Announces His Retirement

Dr. Nowell Donovan, Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, announced he will retire in May 2019.

“He felt like it was the right time,” Board of Trustees Chairman Mark Johnson said.

As Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Donovan is the senior member of the Chancellor’s Staff, with
the primary responsibility for academic leadership, coordination of planning, policy, development and assessment. He also
serves as a professor and holds the Charles B. Moncrief Professor of Geology. He joined TCU in 1986 and was appointed
        provost in 2004.

Provost Donovan studied at the King Edward VII School, Lytham St. Annes, Lancashire, England, and the University of
Newcastle-upon-Tyne in Newcastle, England, ultimately earning a doctorate from the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne
        in 1972.

Under his leadership as Provost, our University has enjoyed profound academic success – increased enrollment, higher
academic profile and an overall focus on person-centered academic excellence housed in extraordinary facilities built for a
21st century education. In particular, we owe the success of our reimagined library and inter-disciplinary academic space
in Rees-Jones Hall to Provost Donovan’s diligence and vision.

“Provost Donovan’s departure will truly mark the end of an era for this University,” Boschini wrote in a campus-wide
email. “We are indebted to his insight and commitment for propelling us to our current level of success, and for ensuring
our continued achievements even into the next century.”

                                 a fond farwell

Dennis Gibbon and Cheryl Marquart Retire after a combined 59 years of service.

In May, Mary Couts Burnett Library bid a fond farewell to Dennis Gibbons and Cheryl Marquart as they began retirement
adventures. Gibbons was part of the Library team for 30 years, most notably as our Collection Development Librarian.
Associate Dean Tracy L. Hull describes Gibbon’s impact, saying,

“Dennis has played a big role in building our collections, both print and electronic, to the stellar
collection we have today. In the past 10 years, his responsibilities have increasingly become
more focused on electronic resources and I have appreciated his attention to detail in reviewing
and negotiating our licenses. His sense of humor and easy-going spirit helped him build good
relationships not only with folks here in the library, but also with vendors.”

Marquart spent her 29 year career as a member of the esteemed
Acquisitions Team. Throughout her time at TCU, Cheryl has managed
various book approval plans as well as ordering countless books for
our collection. Dennis Odom, Head of Technical Services, describes
                              Marquart saying,

“Cheryl has gone from having to place orders on a single stand-alone terminal, shared by
multiple staff members, to ordering books from all parts of the country thanks to the Web and a
handy purchasing card. Her skill at finding out-of-print titles will be greatly missed. I truly
appreciate all Cheryl has done for Acquisitions and the Library during her tenure here.”
