Library hosts distinguished
faculty in lecture series

The FacultySpeak Lecture Series showcases the work and interests by faculty at Texas Christan University. This is a time for
faculty members to share their current research or present recently published works. The Library hosted two stimulating lectures
this spring semester.

On February 25, Nick Bontrager, assistant professor of new media art, presented an enjoyable
talk on the creation of interdisciplinary studio art courses at TCU and the introduction of
emerging technologies for artists and researchers. Bontrager shared some amazing pieces of
3-D art, a media presentation and a one-minute video created by his students. It is certainly safe
to say Bontrager’s students are eager to explore and expose their creativity while learning the
physical and conceptual nature of the moving image, game-based interactions and exchanges
and mankind’s struggle to discover the vast unknown.

Edgar S. Hamilton: Ambitions and Ideals of a Young Texas Artist was presented by Mark
Thistlethwaite, professor of art history, on April 23. After extensive research, Thistlethwaite presented a
collection of holdings that included letters, paintings and drawings by a little known Texas artist, Edgar S.
Hamilton (1869-1903). These holdings provide an intimate view of the artist who regarded art as a noble
enterprise. Showing Hamilton’s art, Thistlethwaite intrigued us with the artist’s story and through his
art gave us a historical perspective from this young painter who declared: “I never allow myself to think
otherwise than that someday I will be one of the greatest artists the world has ever seen...” (June 7, 1894).
The letters, paintings and drawings were presented to the Library’s Special Collections department by
Hamilton’s great-niece, Evelyn Mooring.
