University Library Committee
Minutes April 15, 2003, 3:30 PM
The meeting was called to order at 2:00 PM in the
library conference room. The following individuals were present: Sue
Anderson, Ernest Couch, Lee Daniel, John Harvey, Jane Mackay, Donnell
Payne, June Koelker, and Bob Seal.
Information Items:
SACS Evaluation: Bob Seal reported that there were no
recommendations for the library on the SACS evaluation.
Staff Vacancies: Bob Seal reported that there are two
staff vacancies as a result of retirements. Glenda Stevens (Wright
archivist) has already retired and June Koelker is chairing the search
committee to hire her replacement. Sheila Madden (music librarian) is also
retiring at the end of this semester.
Summer Building Projects: Bob Seal reported that this
summer the carpet on the main floor will be replaced. The basement will
get a new linoleum floor. The library will also get a new roof on the 1985
addition. Finally, installation of a sprinkler system will begin this
summer and is expected to take 18 months to install.
Friends Banquet: Bob Seal reported that the banquet is
scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 at 6:30 at the Kelly center. Betty Buckley
is the speaker. The TCU Texas Book Award will be given to Jeff Guinn for
Our Land before We Die.
Faculty Speaker Series: Bob Seal reported that the
Friends of the Library has instituted a faculty speaker series that will
occur once per semester. Linda Hughes was the speaker on April 9th at an
English Tea held at the home of Cynthia Reeves. Her presentation was
entitled Reading on the Installment Plan: Victorian Literary
Classics.
Discussion Items:
New Catalog Interface: June Koelker described the
process to select a new catalog interface.
Criteria for selecting a product include: PeopleSoft
interface, ability to search across databases and by material type, as
well as migration issues. Three products have been selected. Vendors for
these products will be on campus on May 9, 14, & 15. A foundation has
offered to fund the new system. Implementation is expected June 2004 or
earlier.
Library Space Update: Bob Seal reported that the
library plans to submit a proposal for a new library building, due to the
space limitations in the current building.
Budget Outlook for Next Year: The library materials
budget was increased 3.3% compared to 6-8% in previous years. The library
expects to do a serials review in the fall to determine whether some
serials could be discontinued. The Library Committee will be consulted
regarding any decisions that might be made as a result of this review.
