Library Committee Minutes September 13, 1999
Chair: Barkman
Committee: Staples, Weis, Gouwens, Acevedo-Leal, Couch, Page-Garrison, Seal, Koelker, Nair
Absent: Patton, Woodworth, Jost, Spann, and Fokkens
- Electronic Journals
Bob Seal gave an overview of the Library’s collection of e-journals. He noted that three years ago, the Library had no electronic journals and today has more than 600. Sixty percent of the journals are in the science and technology area. Bob highlighted the growing importance of this format for the Library.
- netLibrary
Bob described a new service that the Library will acquire, netLibrary. NetLibrary will offer online, electronic access to approximately 3,000 to 7,000 monograph titles. This service will enable the reader to download a limited number of pages within each title. The group of monographs included in this service will probably include titles both owned and not owned by the TCU Library. Individual books can be “checked out” in that a user may reserve a book for a period of time through this online service.
- Barnes & Noble
Bob Seal updated the committee on the Library’s B&N activities. This project involves a review of policies, services, and the purchase of new furniture and equipment to enhance the Library’s ambiance for students. The Periodicals Room is now equipped with a sound system. The Library plays classical music for part of the day in this area. The Library changed in food and drink policy to allow students to bring covered drinks and small food items (candy, chips) into the library. The Library will begin construction of a coffee café in the lobby later this fall. Comfortable, oversized chairs are available around the building. Collectively, these changes will provide a welcoming, inviting place for TCU students.
- Library Budget
Bob Seal reviewed the status of the Library’s budget for FY2000. The Library was funded an additional 9.5% for periodicals, 8% for electronic services, and 2% for monographs. In the case of periodicals and monographs, this increase reflects inflation. The electronic services reflect both inflation and funding for new products. The Library also received additional funding for its student budget and its travel/training budget.
- Highlights of Seal’s presentation to the Faculty Senate on September 2, 1999
Bob Seal gave an overview of his earlier Faculty Senate presentation.
- Library Annual Report
Bob Seal distributed the Executive Summary of his Annual Report to the committee. Copies of the full report are available to anyone interested.
Other items
Barkman asked Seal to publicize information about the library in Liberia that receives old TCU library books. He indicated that faculty may have earlier editions of textbooks that could be sent to this Library.
Nair indicated that students are interested in extended library hours and also a 24-hour place to study. He expressed a reluctance by graduate students to ask for assistance from students staffing the Reference Desk who are not as knowledgeable about library resources as the librarians. Seal indicated that this department temporarily has two full time staff positions vacant and suggested the use of the “24 Hour Reference Desk” option on the Library’s web page and email.
The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for mid to late October.
