Electronic Resources
Bibliographic management software: RefWorks is a Web-based bibliography and database manager that allows users to create personal citation databases by importing references from text files or online databases. These references can be used in writing papers and automatically format the footnotes or endnotes and the bibliography in seconds using whatever citation style is needed (e.g. MLA, APA etc). Information saved is accessible from any computer with a web browser and Internet connection. Databases: Over 300 databases are currently available, including full text databases and document delivery services, as well as periodical and newspaper indexes. Document delivery services: The Library provides access to two document (article) delivery services, Ingenta and Infotrieve. Faculty and graduate students may obtain copies of journal articles free of charge by fax or electronically. In addition, Ingenta allows users to set up Current Awareness searches, which allow them to receive either Tables of Contents from selected journals on a regular basis, or have a prearranged search strategy run weekly, a convenient way of keeping up in an area of continued interest. E-books: The Library has access to thousands of electronic books from Ebrary and netLibrary. The e-books are integrated into the Library's catalog like print books, and can be checked out from any web browser on or off campus 24/7, to be viewed online using free e-book reader software. E-journals: The Library has access to the full text of thousands of electronic journals. TCU has implemented software using the ‘OpenURL’ standard to make it easy to seamlessly move from citations in databases to full-text articles in our e-journal collection. E-reserves: Material that can legally be photocopied for print reserves may also be placed on electronic reserve. Using online reserve as an alternative to print means that students do not have to compete for access to one or two copies of a printed item. Online reserves are available 24/7, from any web browser on or off campus.
Interlibrary Loan online: The TCU ILL department can borrow almost any book and obtain almost any journal article from several thousand libraries worldwide. ILL Direct is available online using using FirstSearch's WorldCat database. Patrons may submit a request online and are notified by the ILL department when the book arrives. My Library: MyLibrary is a product that enables instructors to easily create online resource guides for students. Students logging on to MyLibrary will automatically get links to online reserves for any courses they are enrolled in, links to resources for subject areas the students have chosen, and a "personal bookmark list" that is accessible from any computer with an Internet connection. Instructors can use the MyLibrary "Course Guide" interface to create links to databases, web pages, and syllabi, or they can use a simple "Link Guide" feature to quickly give their students links to course pages the instructor has created with WebCT or other tools. Online catalog: The online catalog for the Mary Couts Burnett Library is available to the general public. The catalog can be accessed 24 hours a day through the Web. Please note that the lab and most databases are available only to TCU faculty, students and staff. |
