BROWSING and Selecting Popular FILMS and VIDEOS        l.ruede@tcu.edu

The Music/Media Library at TCU houses a fine, though not comprehensive, collection of popular films in English and other languages.  There are several ways you can browse popular films in the collection by using the online catalog at http://lib.tcu.edu.  Browse film titles exactly as they appear on the shelves by completing the following steps:

In Basic Search mode, select Call Number from the .Search. drop-down box; select Video (any format) from the “Format” drop-down box.  Next, type in a call number.

For English language films, enter or PN 1997.2 (releases from 2001 forward) or PN 1997 A2

To browse English language films boxed as collections, enter PN 1997

To browse animated films, enter PN 1997.5

To browse popular (not educational) TV programs, enter PN 1992.8

To browse foreign language films, enter PN 1995.9 F67

To see a list of film titles in a particular foreign language, do a Words Anywhere search for original film soundtrack <language> (use quotation marks) with Video (any format) selected:

After clicking the .Search. button, film titles will appear in alphabetical order.   Below are results for a search on call number PN 1997 A2.  To see more information about a film, click on the underlined title in the results list.

The full catalog record offers helpful information about the film, including subject headings that can be used for topical or genre searches (to search for films on these topics, be sure to limit searches to Video (any format).

Clicking on

the map (location) link yields a visual guide to the item’s location:

Still more information is viewable by clicking on Detailed Holdings in the purple Location Box.  Sometimes multiple volumes will be shown, or special Notes concerning the item.  Of particular interest is the Due column, which will contain the date of return for the item if it is checked out.  If the item is checked out, the word “Request” will appear, and you may click on that to request that the item be held for you when it is returned.

If fuller plot or other information is needed, a good resource is http://imdb.com (Internet Movie Database).  For film information plus recommendations, enjoy The Reel World @ TCU on Facebook.  Print Reel World issues are available in the Music/Media Library.

Please note that the full call number is needed in order to retrieve an item, complete with the location designation (for example, Music Library, Media Library: PN1997 .A22 2000).  The call number appears in the purple Location box at the end of a catalog record, as well as in the Detailed Holdings screen.  If in doubt about where to find an item described in a catalog record, click the map (location) link.
