Updated editions were published in 1978, 1982, 1985, 1987, 1991, 1993, 1995, 1997, 1999, and 2001. The "NASW Register" has become an important resource for identifying social workers who are qualified providers of mental health services. Like its predecessors, this edition aims to advance sound professional practice standards by providing a uniform method to identify qualified clinical social work practitioners.
The NASW Register's objectives are as follows:
* To provide listings of qualified clinical social workers who meet uniform national professional criteria.
* To provide a reference for the general public, voluntary and governmental agencies, third-party payers, employee assistance programs, and information and referral services.
* To facilitate improved inter- and intraprofessional referrals and facilitate consultation to accommodate individualized treatment planning that is sensitive to diagnosis, preferred treatment modality, cultural issues, and geographic location.
* To provide the criteria that NASW recommends employers use in selecting qualified independent clinical social workers in individual private and group practices.
The "NASW Register" lists clinical social workers at two levels of experience and expertise. Along with other specified criteria, the "Qualified Clinical Social Worker" credential recognizes those social workers with a minimum of two years of postmaster's supervised experience in clinical social work. The "NASW Diplomate in Clinical Social Work" is the advanced clinical specialization credential that was established by the NASW Board of Directors in June 1986 and reinstituted in February 1992.
